Project obstacles and solutions: The River Ridge Five building is a 500,000 square foot spec warehouse built for Capstone Realty in the River Ridge Business Complex. The project is built with tilt-up concrete walls that were cast on site and then lifted into position by crane.

Tilt-up concrete walls are used to gain some flexibility in the wall construction and to eliminate transportation costs for precast walls. Since the walls are built on site, it is easier to make modifications to the walls than it is in a precast situation. It also helps with the construction schedule as there are no delays waiting on materials to arrive on site as can happen in transporting precast walls.

IMI supplied 15,000 yards of concrete for this project. After the slab was poured and cured, the wall forms were built on top of the slabs. IMI supplied 4,000 psi concrete for the walls. After curing a minimum of seven days, the walls were lifted into place. There were 120 wall panels in the River Ridge Five building.

When the final section of panels were ready to be poured, AML needed to speed up the construction of the walls. They requested that the concrete mix be adjusted to reach a minimum of 3,000 psi in three days, since the walls had to reach this early strength before they could be moved into place. IMI QC/QA made an adjustment to the mix and were able to average a three day strength of 3,700 psi.
