The Evaporation Rate/Concrete Crack Control Calculator is a general guideline to help control plastic shrinkage cracking due to premature evaporation of bleed water. Evaporation is one cause of plastic shrinkage, but other factors can cause plastic shrinkage cracking. The finisher should refer to established trade guidelines and engineering specifications to control cracking.
Normal Conditions  
No evaporation retardant is needed.
 
Caution  
Conditions may cause water to evaporate too quickly from freshly poured concrete. Evaporation retardant is RECOMMENDED to control plastic shrinkage cracking.
 
High Alert  
Conditions will cause water to evaporate too quickly from freshly poured concrete. Evaporation retardant is REQUIRED to control plastic shrinkage cracking.
 
Evaporation retardants are available from IMI and can be delivered with your concrete order or picked up at our concrete plants. Order it premixed or in concentrated form. Evaporation retardants can be sprayed on newly poured concrete at any point in the finishing process.
